About Tipping
Tipping is a practice of giving a gratuity (additional money) to service workers for their service. It's customary in many countries, particularly in the United States, where service workers often receive lower base wages with the expectation that tips will supplement their income.
Standard Tipping Guidelines
- Restaurants: 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is standard. 10% for poor service, 20% for good service, and 25%+ for exceptional service.
- Bars: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the total tab.
- Food Delivery: 10-15% of the bill, with a minimum of $2-5.
- Taxi/Rideshare: 10-15% of the fare.
- Hotel Housekeeping: $2-5 per day.
- Hairdressers/Barbers: 15-20% of the service cost.
Tipping Etiquette Around the World
- United States & Canada: Tipping is expected (15-20%).
- United Kingdom: Service charge is often included (10-15%), but additional tipping is appreciated.
- Europe: Service is typically included in the bill, but rounding up or leaving a small amount is common.
- Japan: Tipping is not customary and can sometimes be considered rude.
- Australia: Tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service (10%).
- China: Tipping is not traditional but is becoming more common in tourist areas.
Tip Calculation Formula
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)
Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
Amount Per Person = Total Amount ÷ Number of People
Tip
When dining in a group, consider calculating the tip based on the pre-tax amount and before any discounts or coupons are applied. This ensures that your server is tipped fairly based on the value of the service provided.
